Finally after 10 years of having a permanent residence in South Australia, we caught the train into the city and did an architectural tour of Adelaide. I know we are prejudiced but we live in a stunning part of the world!!
South Australia was the only free state in Australia, no convicts came here originally - (however now we breed our own ).
Adelaide is know as the 'City of Churches'.
I have included many pictures of buildings and often have no names for these buildings.

At the
Adelaide Oval (originally built in the 1870's), we visited the
"Sir Donald Bradman " Collection (The greatest cricket batsman in history 1927-1977). Adelaide Oval has been used for Cricket, AFL, Tennis, Cycling, in 1911 the original scoreboard was first used, American Football, in 1943 Air raid precaution demonstration, 1949 women's first test match against England, 1958 Soccer, 1960 Highland games, 1977 Rock Concert "Fleetwood Mac", 1991 Rugby League, 2003 Rugby Union and many other events. The Oval definitely moves with the times!!

Captain Mathew Flinders- 1774-1814.
Born on 16th March 1774 in Donington, Lincolnshire (Very close to were we lived in the UK).
He Circumnavigated Australia to identify it as a continent & mapped many coast lines in Australia.
We have many places named in his honour- Flinders Ranges, Flinders St, Flinders Pk, Flinders Chase National Park, Flinders Highway, Flinders Hospital & Flinders University to name a few.

Former Treasury Building (Build in stages 1839-1907).
The main Adelaide Post Office.
The product of an Architectural Competition won in 1866, by architects Edmund Wright & Edmund Wood. The post office opened in 1872 and was the tallest building in Adelaide in the Twentieth Century.
Overland telegraph Adelaide to Darwin - (3178klm's)
The first telegram was received in this post office building on 22nd October 1872.
This building was originally erected 34 metres to the South. This building was preserved by moving it bodily to this new position on the 8th December 1979. This 1000 tonne structure was moved on rollers along a concrete & steel runway beams - using hydraulic rams.
