Mareeba, QLD. (1)

Jaques Coffee Plantation is our first stop of the day. We had a fun filled day, firstly on the off-road Segway tour, followed by coffee, followed by a Gyrocopter Aircraft flight, followed by lunch, followed by a tour and Coffee Liqueur tasting.
These our the things I remember from our educational day on coffee!
> Jaques is a family business (3 generations) The family moved from Tanzania to start their new plantation in Queensland. They have been broke twice and still kept fighting to make excellent coffee.
> It takes 6kg of Cherries to make 1kg of Coffee beans.
> Jaques has 85,000 Arabica trees in rich soil on their 200 acre plantation.
> Pruning happens every 9 years approximately.
> Coffee Cherries never grow on dead wood.
>You get two beans from one Cherry.
> When roasting coffee, the difference is only 30 seconds between a medium roast & a dark roast.
>  Jaques get a crop once a year.

The Off-Road Segway tour was good fun & informative.

CoffeeWorks is the original Roastery & Chocolatier of the Tropics. This boutique family business began as a single stall at Rusty's markets, Cairns 1988. We paid $10 each and were able to taste 4 different teas, over 20 different coffee's, 4 liquor's and the chocolate- just fill your face!
The museum displays plungers, filters, percolators, samovars, espresso machines, grinders & balance pots. The museum has over 2000 coffee & tea making treasures. This is the biggest, best & most significant collection of coffee artefacts in the World.

Cooktown to Mareeba. QLD.

We stayed for 5 nights in Cooktown over Christmas, the first 3 days were glorious, Steve & Glen had a morning fishing, we went to the market, had fish &chips on the foreshore, had an evening listening to a band, swam in the pool, visited the RSL & The Top pub. Christmas eve Jane & Glen treated us to a lovely Christmas meal, on the balcony of the Sovereign Resort, when the rain began at 8pm. To say we had torrential rain on Christmas day is an under statement, we set up in the camp kitchen, however due to the swirling winds, we still needed umbrella's!

I love these colours & the water droplets.
