So we reached the "tip" and next we take an excursion to the Torres Strait islands. It was Thursday, so we thought we would visit Thursday Island!! We boarded our cat hull ferry which was new in March called Torres Magic. Thursday Island is 30km of the "Tip". We passed Horn Island, Prince of Wales Island, Maralug & Hammond Island to name a few. There are over 100 Islands only 36 are inhabited. The Islands main industries are Cray fishing, Trochus shell & Pearl Farming.b T.I. covers 3.5 sq km with a population of 3000. T.I. is the administrative & commercial centre for the Islands of the Torres Strait and is only 80km south of PNG. One Island is only 5km south Of PNG, all still part of Australia. The Islands were named after people who discovered them or a day of the week!! We had drinks at the "Top Pub" most Northern Australian pub. We did a tour of the Island, taking in the Museum, located in the Fort (1898)on Green Hill, which was built to keep the Russians out. Fuel was $2.12 here and on Cape York it is $2.35!!
The scenery is absolutely stunning, breathtaking views of islands, channels, ocean & green hills. The most important thing is the friendliness of the Islanders, they are such happy, smiley people! (Why wouldn't you be, living in a place like this). On the trip over I meant a local, she said everyone calls her "Aunt Mary", well she told me so many stories and gave me lots of information & she was a joy to be around, a lovely lady!! The trip back was a bit rough, but well worth the trip!!
